Barry Spinner is a psychotherapist, registered social worker and mediator who lives and works in Hamilton. Trained in multiple therapeutic and dispute resolution models, Barry focuses on providing therapeutic consultations from a Narrative approach, pioneered by Michael White and David Epstein, and interest-based mediation.
With a background in supporting individuals diagnosed with life-changing psychiatric issues and families of youth and young adults, Barry focused his studies on Narrative therapy as it became apparent to him that the psychiatric system and model cannot completely serve everyone in need. Systematic gaps in the mental health care system, evidenced by a heavy reliance on psychopharmaceuticals, led Barry to establishing his private practice. Due to Barry’s extensive experience working within a hospital and community setting, he is well positioned to work alongside clients who either have existing support from the public mental health system, or are seeking help outside of a medical setting.
Barry holds a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Toronto with a specialization in Mental Health, a Bachelor of Social Work degree from McMaster University, a diploma from Sheridan College in Community Outreach, certification from Boston University in Psychiatric Vocational Rehabilitation, and York University in Dispute Resolution. He also regularly attends professional development training at Wilfred Laurier University and other institutions.
Because Barry is a registered social worker, fees may be covered partially or completely by submitting them to your employer’s benefit plan.
My practice is built on respecting and promoting equity and dignity, and so I approach my work informed by the reality of oppressive structures, affecting people on vectors of gender, sexual orientation, race, culture, age, (dis)ability and socioeconomic status.
